To directly answer your questions: A Router is the device that you need to share a single Internet connection with multiple computers. It is required for you to share one IP address with multiple computers. A Switch is used to connect multiple computers together using ethernet cables. A Hub does the same thing, but a switch will work out to be a better device in the long run. Most routers now come with a built-in hub or switch. They will have one WAN (Wide Area Network - The Internet) port and multiple LAN (Local Area Netowrk - Your computers) ports.
