Well, now I am sad... I do not think this DSL high-speed modem stuff is gonna work for me....
But let me start by thanking ALL OF YOU again for the help and comments regarding my DSL adventure; my QUEST as it were to speed up my WWW experience on my PMacs. And another BIG UP'S to those of you who helped me w/ my 7600 problem. And yes, IT WAS THE FINDER that was the culprit (as of course U had no doubt!). But U know something else? I found out that trashing the TCP/IP preferences also solved a continuing crashing problem during shutdown that I was having on my 7300 (7.6.1) after I tried to connect it to the DSL modem and failed. So my question for the panel this morning is this : Why does using (or trying to connect) DSL to my 7300-7600 Macs, and the inevitable crashing of my ISP, cause so many things to get corrupted? In each situation, it seemed that when my ISP (AOL) crashed while either using DSL (OR the TCP/IP was configured for the DSL and it did not work), the problems with the finder started, necessitating trashing my finder+TCP/IP prefs, and/or replacing the finder entirely. I mean, as an AOL user OF COURSE I have had crashes before, but they never seemed to do the damage that is going on now. And then, when using my DSL on my 7100/G3/8.6; while the finder seems okay, AOL crashes WHENEVER I ATTEMPT TO GOTO the www, and IE works okay, but it is SLOWER w/ the initial contact w/ a webcite than dial-up was! And frankly, what is the point of having DSL with these two problems?!? And (ssssh!) to be totally honest w/ ya, while I DID see speed improvements when using DSL on my computers that could use them (OS 8.0 and above), I was expecting MORE SPEED than what I received (Hey, Dan Ackroyd PROMISED ME Charter would be f-a-s-t!). But what was gained in speed was MORE THAN COMPENSATED FOR in the trouble connecting (for me), the crashing (and its related problems), the times the service was down, and of course, THE PRICE!!!! DSL on my 7600/200 is like having a moving man working for ya who moves s-l-o-w-l-y, then U increase his strength... while he may be able to load more on every trip, HE STILL MOVES just as slowly on every trip. :-) SO UNLESS one of you Jedi Masters has some helpful hints/explanation regarding DSL corrupting my poor Mac's files, then I am afraid THIS PADAWAN will haveta scrap my move to the 21st century and stick w/ dial-up Craig W. p.s - Hey; I'll bet sometime in the future SOMEONE will invent a dial-up modem that can exceed 56k, huh? -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
