The last AOL version for 9.xx and earlier is 5.0. The default settings on the 
tool bar will send plain text.

My tool bar in AOL 5.0 is set to: Geneva 12, text set to black, background 
set to white. And do not use the camera icon to insert a picture, HTML link, 
etc.

If your friend is using AOL for OS X there is a serious design flaw that 
prevents the user from sending plain text. In AOL for OS X the only way I 
know to send plain text is to use AOL web based Email which is called AOL 
Anywhere or My AOL and can be found at http://aolmail.aol.com/

I have the AOL for OS X version installed on my 7300/200 and it is a real 
hassle to use if you need to send text only (like posting to the LEM
