The last AOL version for 9.xx and earlier is 5.0. The default settings on the tool bar will send plain text. My tool bar in AOL 5.0 is set to: Geneva 12, text set to black, background set to white. And do not use the camera icon to insert a picture, HTML link, etc. If your friend is using AOL for OS X there is a serious design flaw that prevents the user from sending plain text.
