This is a common problem with certain printer drivers and I haven't
found an easy fix yet. The 'full' disk is the spool disk and it happens
with my Epson printer drivers and even my PressReady RIP when printing
large files. I've phoned Epson about it and they just recommend more
memory for the driver - but that didn't work even though I gave it 100MB.
I think PressReady has an update which cures it.
I think it happens when the file presented for printing has the
potential for a great deal of calculation for conversion to print. The
best file format to present to an inkjet is an uncompressed RGB TIFF (I
would avoid PICT format) in the matching/divisible resolution of the
printer - so if the printer is 720 dpi the image should be 720 ppi (a bit
big) or an easy division of this like 360 or 180. Conforming to the res
of the printer avoids heavy calculation of error diffusion etc as it has
to create or discard pixels and 'dither' what's left.
CMYK files of whatever format should not be presented to an RGB
printer - as most inkjets are RGB except for the high end stuff like Iris
- as this forces the printer driver to change the CMYK back to RGB and
into it's own particular version of CMYK to print - and it holds all this
information in the spool folder tripling the size of the file.
Allotting 60+ megs of ram to the Desktop printer may work - may not
depending on the particular spool limits of the driver - increasing the
HP driver ram may work but then again it didn't for me on the Epson -
'disk full' again.
