>I've seen people mention that theres a limit of a G4/400 or G3/800 on a G3 >model. But you can get a G4/800 for a PCI PowerPC. How so? Does this >limitation mean that something like a 9500 is a better cheap Mac than a G3 >for future upgrades?
I don't know about the limit on the G3 model, but Sonnet's G4/800 for PCI Macs (73/75/76/85/86/95/9600 and clones) uses a newer G3 chip that runs at a 16x multiple of the bus speed. I'd check the various upgrade manufacturers (Sonnet, PowerLogics) to see what they have for your computer. If you are talking about the original beige G3's, I'd almost say yes the older PCI Macs are better as they seem to be a bit more stable than the beige G3's. If you are talking about later G3's, I'd say no, as the later units came with a 100 Mhz system bus, faster IDE, and built-in USB/Firewire. The 100 Mhz bus gives them a throughput advantage over the PCI Macs and the other features will allow them to last longer with fewer upgrades. -- -- Mr. PopMan - [EMAIL PROTECTED] - "Does anybody want to play a game of pinball?"
