My 4400/200 lives, thanks to the advice I got here. I ordered a battery for it over the weekend, $12 plus $7 frieght, and then I found a much better deal on eBay. Shouldn't have looked. ;)
I saw the post from Clyde this morning about using a Radio Shack battery holder. I taped three AA batteries together, attached the wires and connector from the old battery, and plugged it in. It works! I've got a couple of questions. 1. The hard drive has some stuff on it that she wants on her. I could do floppies, but that seems like a lot of work. My PC has a SCSI card with 50-pin connection. Can I plug the Mac and the PC together and transfer files? If so, I could put everything on two or three CDs. 2. Anyone know how the hard drive is mounted? <long story snipped> Is it supposed to be under the CD-ROM ? It has a stamped metal plate attached to it with four screws but I can't find anywhere to snap it in. I talked to the guy who pulled it out but he doesn't remember what he did. He says he didn't have to remove any screws but it looks to me like something's missing. I could take pictures but if someone can give me a hint, maybe I'll figure it out. Thanks again for the help.
