In OS X 10.2 the Finder has a "find" command at the bottom of the 
"File" menu. This searches for files and folders on your hard drive(s). 
To search the content of files, go to Finder preferences and at the 
bottom is an option for languages to search file contents with. I'd 
suggest turning off all languages except English, assuming your friend 
speaks English. I've heard on several of these lists that disabling the 
extra languages speeds up the overall operation of the computer, 
although given OS X's unix underpinnings, I doubt this. Probably just 
the placebo effect. John
