Charlie I wondered the same thing when I upgraded to 9.2.1.  From What I
could discern this either a pci card check and/or hardware check.  The
little spinning ball appears right after the Ethernet extension loads.  At
least that�s what it does on my 7300/G3 running 9.2.2.  At first when I
installed 9.2.1 the little icon appeared the ball began spinning and BAM
system would crash at this point.  Turned out my PCI Firewire card wasn�t
playing nice wit 9.2.1.  Got the 9.2.2 update now everything is fine.  As
far as I know its a hardware check :)
