DAT drives are an archival medium, you cannot use them like a floppy, 
but they are great for their intended purposes for backups. This is 
because they are not random access, ie they have to be read from the 
start of the tape to the end, with no jumping around.

The good news is that almost all DAT drives are supported by Retrospect 
for backups. The bad news is that only the full, most expensive 
version, not the express or cheaper versions is the one that you will 
need to use a DAT drive.
