Confused the heck out of Open Firmware. Try taking out the PRAM battery overnight. The other thing you could try is checking the master/slave settings of the HDD and/or the CD. If they're the only drives on the their respective chains (in our G3 tower the CD was SCSI, so this didn't apply) I had to remove the Master jumper from the HDD before OSX would run, this sounds vaguely familiar.
