Actually you're partially correct Mike. There are a lot of variants of DIMMs;
SDRAM, DDR, EDO (3.3v, 5v) FPM, and so forth. To make sure that a person does
not plug a 3.3v EDO DIMM into a board that accepts only 5v EDO DIMMs for
instance, the socket are made in such a way that the key (the extra notch
along the gold fingers) are off by a couple millimeters. These differences are
not readily apparent until one compares these DIMMs side by side. These
variants BTW are all documented by some standard body (JEDEC I think) and
should be available online for the viewing pleasure of the curious.

I can tell you from experience that they probably won't fit.  The slots
are cut just slightly off so that they don't seat properly between PCs
and Macs.
