Andrew,
Sounds like the extensions required to run the ethernet card are
not installed.  Apple Enet, for instance.  If you installed the OS
with the modem card in the comm slot, then the ethernet extensions
may not have been installed, or may have been placed in the folder
named Extensions (Disabled)
