i too had this problem for a long time, and setting the prefs doesn't always work. Netscape's zoom does work, but for some reason, on many sites you have to hit it about 3 times to get any result, i've no idea why. fortunately, there is a key sequence, <cmd>-<shift>-], just hold the command (or "apple") key and the shift key and hit the right broket key several times (bracket="]" or "[", "broket" is often used for the "<" and ">" characters, some of my favorite terms..). also, if you haven't run into it yet, some sites, including parts of ebay annoyingly, will wipe the page after loading it, turning off javascript will help that. it seems that many web designers are using microsoft's non-standard garbage, out of ignorance or laziness or because they are forced to use the ugly microsoft web stuff (i have a mac friend and long time web developer friend who works for a drive company and is stuck in this situation, microsoft has a way of taking over a companies software once they get a foot in the door). needless to say he's not terribly happy about it. in any case, that's the root of most of these problems. of course some sites won't do diddly without java script on, and some need it on and mess up netscape in which case i'd try omniweb or some other browser.
