Put the power connector into the back of the Maxtor drive while the computer was already up and running from the other HD. Very uneventful and unfortunately I was right about the drive not being detected since it wasn't on at start up. I ran several utility apps that scan and re-scan for drives thinking they may be able to see it (LaCie Silver Lining, MT everything, SCSI Probe) but they just see the controller card with no drive. Now if I restart I'm sure I'll encounter the same problems with the blank screen after the extensions load and no ability to shut down without pulling the power chord at the back of the 8500.
