Just an update to let everyone know how the guy who started this thread
solved his problem, at least for now...

I got a copy of Thursby's DAVE, v.4.0.2. However, it kept freezing up my
Mac EVERY time I ran it. I called Thursby to see what the problem could
be, and according to them, I am not the only one this has been heppening
to lately. They've had 4 or more customers just in the last week with
the same problems. They have not yet given me a solution. I would
recommend that anyone looking for a Mac/PC networking solution avoid
DAVE, at least until they fix this problem.

Due to the above problems, I went and got a copy of both PC Mac Net File
Share by Lava Software, and PC Mac LAN by Miramar. I tried them both. PC
Mac Net was fast, cheap (around $25), but requires seperate licences for
EACH machine, and each machine must have it installed in order to
exchange files. Also, files are transferred through the program, a la
LimeWire, and printer sharing is not supported.

I went with PC Mac LAN from Miramar for now. It is installed on the PC's
only, is FAST, transparent on both PC and the Mac, simple to configure,
has printer support (Mac printers only, though), and was just about the
only solution that didn't crash on me. Honestly, I like it very much,
but I got mine for free... I wouldn't probably have used it if I had to
pay for it, as it is among the most expensive solution out there ($200,
DAVE was $150, Lava's option was $25 per machine).

The only problem I have had with PC Mac LAN is the fact that other than
not being able to print to WinTel printers from the Mac, I only have a
copy that works on Win2000 or XP: My Win 9x machines are not shared
right now. I'll have to find a copy of the 9x version soon.

Honestly, if I didn't get my software for free, I don't know what I
would have done. Probably either set up a Linux PC or older Mac as a
server, or the klunky FTP deal on all machines. This is really a
long-overdue problem that needs a low-cost or freeware solution. Macs
and PeeCees have both been around for a long time, and I think more
current PC users would buy Macs if there was a cheap or free solution
for this. If new Macs weren't still so damn expensive, I'd buy one and
use OS X's built-in solution. I am still wanting (and looking actively
for) a newer Mac to buy, something like an iMac DV slot-loading or a B&W
G3 or newer... But, until I find one I can afford... it's a PCI Power
Mac for me!
