I'm willing to try them. The driver I am (apparently) using is:

Apple CD/DVD Driver 1.2.2 from MacOS8.6 package

Kenta, when the driver is disabled, the CD spins but does NOT freeze (as
when the driver is enabled). So...I am unclear, does this mean that the
freezing is related to mounting or hardware?

ASP reports the following in relation to this drive:

Driver Version: Not available (even when driver is enabled in EM)
Vendor: MATSHITA
Prod ID: CD-ROM CD-8008
Serial #: not avail

I can also try the logic board hard reset suggested by Robert tonight...

Thanks all, and please keep the suggestions coming...I'd really like to be
using an 8x in this mac :)
