The startup sequence is a series of checks that culminates in the grey
video screen, before the system folder is found (smiling Mac). The startup
chime is among the first to signify the board is alright up to a certain
point (if the power supply is busted you won't hear it either.)  To reset
the board first remove the PRAM battery after pulling the power cable,
letting the board stand for half hour, depressing the KB power button for
few seconds a couple of times, reinstalling the battery, power cord and
restarting. If you hear the startup chime and get to the grey screen the
Mac's logicboard is alright.
