Are the cases the same size? And the boards? I thought a 3 slot board would
go into a six slot case, but that the six slot board was too big for a three
slot case?

The 8600 case and power supply *is* the 9600 case and power supply.

The 9600 case contains extra sets of mounting latches (unused in the 9600)
which are used in the 8600.

The M3.5-0.5 retaining screw is in the same location for both.

The extra three slots in the case in the 8600 incarnation of this case are
covered up by a black plastic spacer which prevents the case door fan's
cooling air from sneaking under the 8600 mobo.
