For those of you who may have been interested in that D-Link Ethernet to
Wireless bridge, I bought one today at Microcenter to see how it would work
out in a PowerMac 8500.

Box contains: DWL-810+ unit, CD, short ethernet cable, AC adapter (prongs
come out the "top", this could be a problematic shape)

The retail price was basically $99 with an in-store rebate of $20 (instant)
and a D-link mail in rebate for another $20, for a final price of about $60.

My router is a Linksys WAP with wireless and a 4 port hub and I have a PC
and a B&W hard wired in via cat5 (all in same room).

I had to play around with my router's information in order to get the D-link
to work, but now that they are on the same network segment, all seems to be
fine. The linksys router default is an IP of 192.168.1.1 and the D-link
bridge was 192.168.0.30 and both had a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

I don't really know much about networks, but I knew that with that subnet
mask, all machines had to have the first numbers in the IP match. So, I
changed my router's LAN IP address to 192.168.0.1 and the SSID to the
D-link's default SSID. Once they were on the same segment, I was able to use
my 8500 to configure the D-link via iCab :)

I changed the D-link to use DHCP (vs. making the IP 192.168.1.30 or
something), left the SSIDs as they were for now, reset my linksys IP to its
original and once everything rebooted...

it works.

I think this sale ends in about a week or so, best to check your local
MicroCenter circular or their website if you are interested in getting this
thing at this price.

This seems like a great way to get a PCI mac (or other mac with ethernet)
onto a wireless network if you are looking for an alternative to adding USB
+ USB to 802.11b adapter (I do not have USB in my PCI mac nor do I think I
need it in the near future) or getting a PCI Airport bundle. YMMV.

HTH,
Caitlin
