I'm interested in finding out what some of you recommend for video cards.
I've got a PM 7300 and I've loaded up all of the slots for my VRAM (4 Megs).
What I'm looking to do is be able to watch live baseball games off of
MLB.com so my father and I can see games out of our broadcast area. I am
able to watch them right now but the picture isn't too clear, and
transitions aren't very smooth. I'm using a cable modem so no issues there.
Some members of the family may also be looking to use the Mac for games as
well at some point. Any suggestions?
If you are going to stay with 9.2, I highly recommend a Voodoo card. You can frequently get the 3 3000 on the swap list for $20-30. I have used both a Voodoo 3 3000 and a Radeon 7000, and in 9.x, the voodoo blows away the Radeon for performance.
I will admit I have not tried them for streaming video. Also, if you are going to add a DVD drive to your mac, the Radeon will do the hardware decoding for you, the voodoo will not. In addition, the Voodoo is not supported in X, if you are going to go that route.
To give you an idea, at home I have a radeon because I am using X exclusively, except when I need to print to my trusty Stylewriter 1500. I just got a Voodoo for work because I don't have the funds to update all my apps to X versions, so I will be sticking with 9.2.2 for a while.
