Cant think of any shareware freeware defraggers (disk optimisers ) But try versiontracker.com , Applelinks.com, macinstein.com etc.

Performance improvement depends of how big ther drive is and how badly fragmented it is. If it seems program antions and file opening is slower than you remember then chances are defragging will help.

I did it a few months back after going a year since the last defrag. Om my 2 Gig drive it made quite a difference in snappy file actions.
