Thanks! I've given it 1000k and boosted the minimum to the minimum level (it was set 
below this).

What application is this? The only printer driver my Mac will access is LaserWriter 8.

Thanks. I have at present 768mb RAM and a 36gb boot HD which is far from full, so 
these shouldn't be a problem. It did this with 1.5gb RAM too.

I have looked for printer drivers. nothing in my Extensions and Find doesn't find 
anything "drivers'. Perhaps lack of a driver is part of my Chooser problem? I have a 
LaserWriter Pro 630 printer description, but doubt this is a driver(?). I bought the 
printer used and it didn't come with any software, but I have been using it for some 
years now.
