As a back up for yourself on that machine, sure there is a way to do this.
You need to look at Toast or whatever you use to burn and choose the options
for making a bootable mac disk. You need to go through it a bit by studying
your software and become aware of your options. It is not hard but requires
attention. It is a matter of choosing the commands available to you in the
menus. 

Otherwise, you can just simply copy the system folder to a CD and if it is
not bootable it is still "as you had it" and can be used later to restore
the original by throwing it out and replacing with the backup - given that
you can start from any other means (say another HD or Zip or CD).
