am trying to create a exact copy of my HD on another HD to make it the start up disk. I tried dragging and dropping my HD to the new HD, but everything was in one folder on the new HD.
So open that folder and just drag everything in it to the top level of the hard drive.
Then you need to bless the System Folder by double-clicking on it while holding down the option key. This is the "magic" step that tells the Mac OS to modify the boot block on the disk to point to that System Folder. Then you can select it in the Startup Disk control panel.
I would halve to reconfigure internet explorer, outlook express, netscape, etc...
Boot on the the new disk just to make sure it works.
Then rebuild your desktop (hold down cmd-opt while booting).
Then run each app and check its preferences. Some things will just carry over because you've also copied the preference files. Some file and folder references (aliases) will break, so they'll need resetting.
...If you feel like spending a wee bit'o'money, check out Dantz's Retrospect Express. It makes duping bootable disks and other backup operations very easy... http://www.dantz.com/
