I haven't found a check box to have Software Update save the original package. Where is that I wonder??

IAC, you can go into Software Update, check the items you want and select 'Download checked items to the Desktop' from the Update menu.

Install Updates Save As... (disabled, can't enable it) Make Inactive Show Inactive Updates
