Picked one of these cards up for a few cents a couple of days ago. I
suspect it was a "pull" from some 'doze box or another. However, poking
around the manufacturer's site, it looks like the thing MIGHT be useable
on a Mac. Hard to figure out for sure because of the convoluted set of
"pointers" I had to follow, but it seems that "ATI Universal Installer
4.2" might be the thing to use.

I have never played around with video cards before, and before I
frustrate myself into a dither, has anyone ever used such a card with a
Mac? If not, any guesses if it might work?

You will have to go back to the ATI site and look for the page on identifying your card. There should be information based on the part number on the board and the part number on the ROM. The ATI cards are all either Windows or Mac, with only a limited few being flashable from one to the other, and those flashers are NOT supported by ATI. I don't think any of the Rage II cards were flashable.
