I know that I should probably just go ahead and buy a newer modem, but
since I happen to have a Suprafaxmodem 144LC, along with the faxcilitate
and microphone software, I was hoping to be able to use this modem for
my powermac9500. I mainly use a different computer, but I would like to
be able to download and upload a few files directly to/from this mac at times, so I do need a modem, although not a fast one.
I went ahead and hooked up the modem and installed the faxcilitate and microphone software that came with the modem, but neither AOL software nor the microphone software (nor the fax software) seems to work with the modem. When I use the Microphone software, in particular, the "hang up" choice is available in the connection menu, even when I haven't even dialed into a service yet, and when I choose "hang up", the choice doesn't go away. When I try to dial up to my ISP (another one other than AOL), I can't hear anything dialing. When I run AOL, it says that the port is being used.
I know that the modem is not faulty, since I got it to work on another mac.
I am left wondering:
Am I just not changing some parameter to the correct value? [e.g., in some control panel]
Is this modem incompatible with my powermac (no matter which driver I end up finding)?
Do I just need to download an updated driver for OS 9.0?
Could there be a hardware problem with my computer (e.g., the modem port or something else inside) - I guess I could only know this for sure if I were to use a modem that is known to work with OS 9.0 and which is known to be in good working condition.
I tried to find out more from the manufacturer of the modem (Supra), but when I did a search on "supra" on the internet, it appears that Supra Corporation either went out of business or was bought by some
other company.
Apple wanted to charge me $49 for help with this problem, and AOL just referred me to Apple.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely, Mike
