I've got my modem hooked up to one of those NAT firewalling routers.
They're meant for broadband, but mine's got a "backup" serial
connection for a modem, and it handles the PPP stuff.  The computer,
of course, is hooked via the ethernet port to the router.  There's a
Javascript web page on the router for connecting, configuring, etc.  

I haven't done any testing, but just on the surface I'd expect the
ethernet connection to have significantly less overhead than a USB
modem.

I paid $50 after rebate for the router a couple of years ago.
