I bought a new Sony CD-R/RW drive unit, Model CRX220E1 which included an external case, USB cable, USB2.0 installation CD, and a Toast Lite 5.2.1. This is for my PM 7300 upgraded to G3/400, 368MB RAM, OS 8.6. I was assured this CD-R/RW will work on my Mac. I installed a Belkin two-port USB PCI card a couple years ago and it has been working fine with my digital camera and H-P printer; the Belkin also came with USB support software, but version 1.4.1 (I still have the installation program). The software which came with the Sony is Cypress MSC Driver which appears to have installed into the system extensions folder OK; however, there's an ATA Security program with the Cypress folder which, when clicked upon, states "No USB drive selected", whatever that means.

The CD-R/RW drive's enclosed instructions stated that for 8.6 to operate the CD-R/RW drive, I need to install USB Mass Storage Support (USBMSS) 1.3.5, available from Apple's Support site http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60394 . Fine so far; I downloaded the USBMSS and the Read Me text, the latter of which states that it requires Mac OS 8.6 or later.

What I'm running into: (1) When I attempt to launch the USBMSS 1.3.5 installer (either of the two installers, one labelled "Apple SW Install", the other "USB Mass Storage install"), a window pops up stating "This program cannot run on your computer. See documentation for details."; as mentioned above, the Apple documentation states that it WILL run on my computer. And (2) When I launch the Toast Lite 5.2.1 installer, a window pops up stating "The software to be installed requires Mac OS 9.1 or newer, which is not on this computer.".

At this point, the Sony does not show up on my desktop when I connect it and turn it on, no matter in what sequence I do it.

So, what am I doing wrong or what do I still need to buy? Installing OS 9x is not an option; my data is not backed up - which I why I bought this CD-R/RW.

This is my first foray into CD-R/RWs, so I do not have the benefit of experience. Before I start changing around and/or renaming extensions or anything else, I thought I'd better get the advice from those who have travelled this road before.

TIA, Fred
