For Pamela I upgraded my 6500 with a Sonnet G3 400 CPU. I am running OS 9.1 & it works beautifully. Very stable. No problems. Should work on the 6400. I don't think they are that different, really. OOPS! On my Mac 6500 w/ the Sonnet G3 400 CPU upgrade, I do have a Westel external modem as I am on DSL. Maybe that makes the difference.
