As the subject says, will an 8600 AV card fit/work in a 9600?

Nyet.

In fact, there is no "8600 AV card" at all ... the function is mainly within
a set of custom LSI chips on the mobo itself, plus a simple connector block on
the back of the case.

The 9600 has no A-V functionality at all on the mobo, although it does have a
place for the A-V connector block.

(The 8600 and 9600 cases are identical).
