I had a drive doing something even more obnoxious in 8.6. It would go to 
sleep, and then freeze if any programs were up (well, not in every case, 
but if a Microsoft program were up, it would DEFINITELY freeze.) The funny 
thing was, there was no Engergy Saver control panel! So I installed OS 9.x 
and it now works fine.
