Thanks, Steve! And thanks to the rest of you for your input, too.

I resoldered those 3 resistors (had to pull 2 capacitors in order to get
to them) and the problem is solved. I wait on bated breath every time I
boot my Mac, but the display comes up perfectly every time now!

Having fixed this problem, however, another one has re-surfaced. This one
seems pretty minor, but I wonder if it is a harbinger of things to come.
Every now and then the screen cuts of and cuts right back on. Basically,
it flashes a black screen at me for a fraction of a second. During the
"flash," it makes the "I'm changing resolutions" sound. The flash lasts
about that long, too, but there's none of the resolution-change screen
gibberish.  Any ideas?
