I searched through the archives and see that one other person had the
problem I'm having. My 9600 is SCSI based with an Adaptec 29160N card
linking the Fujitsu drives. So I thought I'd get smart and add a Sonnet
Tempo ATA133 card with a large IDE hard drive for backups. But I can't get
past the smiling mac face. Pull one or the other of these 2 cards, no
problem and everything boots fine.

Are you running OS 9.1? I had the exact same symptoms when trying to get the VST UltraTek/66 to coexist with several of the Adaptec cards and the JackHammer PCI card and the Atto UL2D. However, the problem only manifested under OS 9.1. It was fine under 8.6. I don't remember whether 9.04 was okay or not.

It's possible that FirmTek wrote the firmware for your card (they wrote the firmware for the UltraTek) and that they included the same bug.
