Regarding that matter of Internet access, one useful alternative might be a Netgear FR328S.
This features 8 10/100 network ports, supports cable or DSL, provides a full firewall, and also features a serial port that you can use any standard 9-pin serial external modem on. They are quite easy to setup, and are really quite inexpensive. You can use either the modem for Internet, or the ADSL/Cable via Ethernet.
