Unless you have access to a NASA grade clean room, don't bother. The tiniest speck of dust can cause a hard head crash and mechanically trash the drive. All disk drives basically operate the same way from 5meg to 250gig the main difference is the number of platters and the density of the recording. If you want to open one up and play with it, go ahead. If you get it working, great. Just don't store anything more valuble than which color socks you wore on which day 3 weeks ago because the drive will have a spectacular failure in the near future. If you are looking to do componet level repair on the circuit board, any electronics text that tells how to test resisters, diodes, transistors, etc will help you out.
