Mac 9600/Canon USB Printer Problems

I'm trying to connect a Canon S400 printer to my Frankenmac (PowerMac 
8600/9600 Mother Board/xlr8G3/300Mhz/1.5GB RAM/36GB HD/OS 9.2.2) using a 
third-party USB card. Apple System Profiler sees the printer, it shows 
up in the Chooser, but when I try to print I get a "no printer selected" 
message. When I attempt to select Page Setup in any application 
(including the Finder), I get a message that says, "page Setup window 
could not be opened, because an error of type -15,036 occurred."

Any idea what's going on here?
