What made me think was the empty connector on my 4400's motherboard
which says MFM, the internal floppy is connected to the GCR connector.
MFM was a PC standard before ATA, like RLL; it doesn't refer to that, does
it?

Actually, it doesn't. MFM standard was used for hard disks a long while ago but now we're talking MFM floppies who survived but until today. Apple uses GCR drives,but I was it was interesting to find a MFM labeled slot on the 4400 motherboard. That with the discovery of the small power connector for the PC 3.5" floppy gives an impression that (at least this 4400) Mac is more compatible hardware-wise with the PC as it would appear at first.
