Just use one reliable browser for a test. Open nothing else at all. Can you
surf at any reasonable realistic pace (knowing that it can be very slow and
frustrating on 56K for anyone on any machine. Use that other faster
connection you mentioned in your first post if you can). If this test passes
fine and 'cos you are talking multiple apps and switching and cursors it
sounds that slow web browsing might in your case be just a general
consequence of low resources and slow processing speed. If you want to keep
this machine, get more memory first thing.

If you are doing things to web pages, view the effects of your text editing
off line by dragging your html files over your browser, the effect should be
nearly immediate. iCab is brilliant for this and its thing is little memory.
Do same for IE. When you are happy, then upload your files by FTP and see
the effects - more slowly.
