Subject: digital cameras for PCI Macs

Ditto to Clark's response on the whole "built in USB" thing. I have yet to find any device that claims to only work with "built in USB" that won't work off the PCI USB cards that I have in either my 8600/G3 or several G3/DT's that I have. I have read that USB hubs can be problematic at times, but I have no experience using them.
Every digital camera comes with it's own software that the manufacturer wants you to believe is the best and only thing for the camera - balderdash. 99.9 % of the CD's these apps are on would better serve the world as single use frisbees. The MAC OS is more than adequate in this department. If you were to migrate to OSX you have a host of built in apps at your disposal. When I plug any of my cameras into the usb port, within seconds the media card is mounted on the desktop as a disk image and I simply drag and drop the files where I need them and use Photoshop for editing.

As far as your inquiry of which digital camera - http://www.dpreview.com is considered to be the most comprehensive site devoted to digital cameras. They have extensive user/owner reviews of almost every digital camera ever made, and much more useful info as well. I would definitley consult this resource before any digital camera purchase. One thing to bear in mind while reading the reviews however: is just because someone owns an expensive piece of equipment, does not necessarily mean they know how to properly utilize all of it's functions.

In your post you stated that you primarily wanted a camera for doing web stills. Your megapixels requirements would be in the lower range as you stated, if this is all you want to do with the camera.
However IMO, any camera with less than 3MP isn't really worth the asking price.
And even though a web cam can do stills, a web cam should never be considered even close to the worst still camera.
