"The disk could not be opened because an error of type -110 occurred."
Only happens when going to OS 9.
This is a timing bug in the classic Finder. It's been there since OS 8.0. Apple took a few feeble stabs at fixing it in 8.6 and 9.1.
Basically, it's not getting the response it wants from the file system (which is trying to talk to a hard drive, usually SCSI), so instead of retrying it, it's cramping.
Depending on what the Finder is doing, it may be a fatal condition that causes an infinite loop (repeated -110 error dialogs) or crash or it may be temporary.
If the drive in questions is SCSI, try shortening your chain and making sure it's terminated properly (passive for SCSI-1, active for SCSI-II, etc).
Note that if the Finder locks up completely or crashes, the disk cache will not be written out. So anything still in the cache will be lost. This could mean serious file system corruptions... so run Disk First Aid.
