Well, start with Disk First Aid from your boot CD, then you could try the free Tech Tool Lite, but optimally Tech Tool Pro is my favorite....

Also if you are running 8.6 you need to make sure you have the updated
Font Mgr Extension.......

There is only one, and it's specifically for this bug in OS 8.6...but....
First, you must download the free Corrupted FOND Fixer Utility from Alsoft:

Then after running that to fix any corrupted fonts, install the Font Manager Update Extension from Apple here:

http://www.macupdate.com/download.php/ Font_Manager_Update_1.0.smi.bin?id=3583

Install that and it should take care of Font problems which can cause lots of problems.
This is assuming you don't have a hardware or other software problem, but even if you do, this is something that should be done once you get straightened out.
