With most DVD players which can also accept other media (audio CD,
etcetera), the drive is really a CD-DVD-ROM, and the player's OS is
prepared to accept a plurality of formats, not just DVD.

The usual drill is to download the latest hack, burn it to an ISO format
CD-ROM, and insert it into the machine.

The machine sees the ISO format CD-ROM, asumes it is a firmware image,
then proceeds to read that image and write the data into its FLASH.

Some of the most popular hacks are actualy "back doors" already built
into the player, either through a series of nonsensical commands, or a
special code set into the remote.

Some hacks work across entire families of machines; others are model
specific.
