It sounds like an extension conflict or driver problem. Try holding down the shift key at bootup to startup with extensions off. If your Mac boots, you have an extension conflict. Have you tried to boot without the network and video card installed? If your network or video card require drivers, you may need to update the drivers for them. As Lovek said; some people had to use the 8.5 CD driver with 8.6 to make things work. Some didn't, myself included. When I went to 8.6, I had to update a bunch of stuff to make things work right.
