With USB, 4X is about as fast as you can burn, according to Que! drives. That said, I'd still lean toward a slower external drive than a faster internal. The main reason (as someone else already has pointed out) is that you probably won't be able to boot from an internal CDRW drive like you can with an Apple-ROMed internal CD-ROM. Unless you plan on doing a great deal of CD burning, I feel the ability to boot from a CD outweighs the speed issue. If you do need the extra speed, perhaps aquirong an external Apple CD-ROM drive might work well for you. I've got a 4X (model 600e) CD-ROM drive that I keep around just for booting my 7300, should I ever need to. It's not hooked up to the machine unless I need it. >Can anyboby please guide me to make the best decision. I am leaning >towards buying the ZIP650 but the Sony CRX-140s' speed is not easy to >ignore. I would agree with you on buying the external drive. If you were able to find another internal CD-ROM drive, you could also easily make backups of CD's directly, instead of having to dump their contents onto the HD, and then back onto a blank CD. -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
