Turned out to be, of all things, the Twin Turbo 128MA+ that was installed in the machine. It was sitting in the way of the AV board. Now it works fine.
Now I can't get USB to work properly at the moment. I'm going re-do with 9.1 again and see if that works OK.
Oh, and buyer beware on E-Bay items. The box said Mac compatible on my PCI USB/Firewire combo card - ALI chipset. It appears that it sucks the big #*()&^$*(#&. I can't get it to appear properly on either the 6500 or the 8500.
Sucks to be me I guess. ;-)
