I know this has been discussed thousands of times, but I had a few
questions about SCSI termination. I have been having problems with my 8600
locking up and I suspect it is due to a hard drive I just installed.
I used Express Pro Tools to scan my bus and it listed all my devices
with the ID's I set for them. It also showed two host adapters set to ID 7.
Am I correct in assuming that the host adapters are the sockets on the
mother board that the cable plugs in to? If so, would they be terminated
automatically? If, the adapters are ID 7, would the farthest device from them need to
be the lowest ID number...IE 0 or 1? And would that device need to provide
termination for the other end of the cable?
My current configuration has the first device next to the host adapter
as ID 1 and the last device ID 6 and terminated. Do I need to reverse them?
To keep the answer simple, the devices at the physical end of the SCSI cable need to be terminated. The Mac motherboard is always terminated and you need to make sure only the last device on the cable is terminated. Also, the last device needs to be plugged into the physical end of the cable, not in the middle. As for IDs, there is no need to order them, but they must be kept unique.
