I'm using an APC Back-UPS (500v ES, or something like that) on my
PowerCenter, which I picked up at Staples a while ago for $10 after rebate. I often see
deals at Staples, though not that cheap. Unfortunately, as you said, the
Powerchute s/w is not for Mac(at least not for my Macs which run 9.1 but no
built-in USB), so no automatic shutdown. I do get 7 mins. or so on the
battery(varies with your power consumption) to shut down after power failure, so unless
you're leaving your computer untended, that may be enough time for you to
save/shutdown, no?
There is Powerchute software or a similiar software (I believe it's the APC shutdown manager software) for any computer with Mac OS 9.0.4 or later. However, the software will not run unless you have built in usb ports because it relies on some built-in ROM power management code not present on older macs. The only (feasable) option on older macs is to upgrade to OS X (under OS X the powerchute software does not require the newer ROM). Theoretically, you could hack your rom, but that's way beyond my experience.
