I just got a "refurb" SCSI Yamaha cd/rw 4x4x16 unit a CRW4416S from
Justdeals.com and it seems to be faulty. I havnt tried to burn anything
as yet as the unit doesnt seem to play back any cd very well, it skips
from track to track and stops in the middle of a track and no amount of
cleaning the cds seem to help I have played the cds in the other cd
player and they are fine.>

Drive setup recognises the unit but even if there >is a cd in it it
wont mount, The only way to get >a cd to play is to boot with Norton
Utilities in >it and it will boot off this After I do this It >will play
a cd after rebooting

Out of curiosity, are you running it with Toast?

I have the same unit (purchased long ago on eBay) that runs fine on OS
9.1 and Toast 4.0.2. I took my burner from its factory external case and
replaced my internal CD drive with it. You might try swapping it into
your CD player's tray to see if the external cable or box have problems.

It uses the standard 50 pin SCSI 1 or 2 connection to the internal
ribbon cable. A standard 4 pin power connector and the standard SCSI ID
jumper/termination pins are next to the 50 pin connector. The sound in
cable is slightly different, but can be used with a modified audio
cable.

There is hope if you can boot off the NU CD. Next step is to clean the CD lens with alcohol impregnated cleaning disk; or take off the top cover and clean the LED with Q-tip moistened with isopropyl alcohol, the guide rails where the head assembly slides to and from the center. Relubricate the railings with Dri-Lube.

A blast of contact cleaner where the data cable mates with the unit also
hel= ps.

thanks for the thoughts David and Charlie.

I havn't tried to burn anything yet just tried to get the unit to play like a cd player should

Maybe I should add that I used "live"
termination by live I mean the terminating 50 pin plug I put in BELOW
the 50 pin SCSI cable on the back of the unit has a light on it (green)
I did notice on the "inside" unit there is a double pin set near where the scsi ID is set labelled
termination Am I using the right approach here? i.e. "external"
termination?

Taking off the top cover of the actual unit you mean ? Where can you get Dri-Lube from ? I am in Canada but occasionally visit the states.

Is there something that "wears out" in a cd/rw unit ? Or do they just go
til they stop and then cant be repaired by an amateur?

Thanks again

Michael
