In the past few days, I've been working on upgrading an 8600 for my son, and I've run into a very strange problem. First, I maxed the vram, no problem. Installed OS 9.1, ditto. Then, I installed an IBM 4.3 gig hard drive, 50 pin scsi, model DCAS-43330 (I believe). Set the scsi id at 6, installed 9.1, and wiped the original 2 gb drive. Set the new drive as the start up disk, and rebooted into it, no problem. Now for the fun stuff: several hours later, started up the machine, no ibm drive shown. Booted from the 9.1 cd, still no drive, only the original 2 gig. Restarted, now it booted from the system folder on the ibm. Restarted, nothing. Decided to install the FWB drivers, found the floppy drive cannot recognize any disks, only offer to initialize them. Strange. Pulled the battery from the board overnight, tried again, same results. Am I a victim of circumstance here, with a flaky drive and a dying floppy, or have I created a monster?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks, Carl Kehley
